Safety First: Dangote Refinery Explains Reorganisation Amidst Sabotage Concerns

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals management has refuted allegations of a mass sack of its employees, clarifying that a recent reorganisation of its workforce was a necessary measure to address safety concerns and repeated acts of sabotage within the facility.

The company issued a statement in response to claims by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), which alleged that staff were dismissed for joining the union.

Dangote Refinery described the union's allegations as unfounded and misleading, emphasising that the reorganisation was a strategic audit process to ensure the long-term stability and security of the facility, which it calls a strategic national asset.

Despite the changes, the refinery confirmed that over 3,000 Nigerians remain actively employed.

“Only a minimal number of staff were affected,” the statement read, adding that the company is continuing to recruit Nigerian talent through various graduate trainee programs and experienced hire processes.

The reorganisation was prompted by “intermittent cases of sabotage in the various units of the Refinery with dire consequences on human life and related safety concerns,” the management stated.

The company emphasised the importance of protecting the refinery for the benefit of Nigerians and its partners, as well as the thousands of livelihoods that depend on its operations.

The refinery also reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to internationally accepted labour principles, including a worker’s freedom to decide on union membership without interference.

It reiterated that the exercise was an essential step to safeguard the facility’s internal systems and vulnerabilities.

The company pledged to continue working closely with regulators, employees, and stakeholders to maintain the highest standards of safety, transparency, and accountability.
