Woman Arraigned for Allegedly Defaming Nollywood Star Lizzy Anjorin

A 37-year-old woman, Akanji Kofoworola, has been arraigned before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos on charges of allegedly publishing and distributing defamatory content about popular Nollywood actress and businesswoman, Chief (Mrs) Lizzy Anjorin.

The charges stem from posts allegedly made on Kofoworola’s Facebook account.

The Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, brought Kofoworola before Magistrate Wahab Balogun to face a three-count charge that includes conspiracy, publication of fake news, and defamation.

According to the prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Haruna Ibrahim, Kofoworola and other unnamed bloggers still at large allegedly committed the offences within Lagos State from 2023 to the present.

The charges state that Kofoworola unlawfully published false statements and rumours about Anjorin on Facebook, knowing the information was untrue.

She is also accused of using the platform to portray the actress in a derogatory manner and distributing content deemed obscene, all with the intent of damaging public perception of the star.

The prosecutor highlighted that these actions contravene Sections 39, 57, and 150 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

One of the charges specifically reads, “That you, Akanji Kofoworola ‘F’, and other bloggers at large, from 2023 until date, within Lagos State, did unlawfully publish false statements and rumours about Chief Mrs Lizzy Anjorin on Facebook, knowing same to be false, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 39 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.”

Additional charges against Kofoworola include using Anjorin’s image to provoke public disaffection and distributing damaging content to gain social media popularity and financial benefits.

Kofoworola, however, pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Following her plea, the prosecutor requested that she be remanded in custody.

Her lawyer, making an oral bail application, argued that the charges were bailable offences.

Magistrate Balogun granted Kofoworola bail in the sum of N100,000.00 with two sureties who must meet specific conditions set by the court.

The case has been adjourned to August 21, when the trial is scheduled to begin.
