Detained human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has launched a scathing attack on the Nigerian government and police authorities, accusing them of unlawful detention, political persecution, and medical neglect.
In a tense encounter believed to have occurred during a media visit to his place of detention, Sowore appeared visibly agitated, declaring that his continued incarceration lacked any legal justification.
“There is no basis for my arrest in the first place. This shows you that Nigeria is headed by headless people,” Sowore said emphatically.
Sowore, founder of the #RevolutionNow movement and publisher of Sahara Reporters, accused the Inspector-General of Police and President Bola Tinubu’s administration of turning Nigeria into what he described as a “foolish theatre.”
“I've been expecting this nonsense from them since I was attacked. They even came here, and I knew the next thing would be to bring the press, to create the impression that I’m doing fine,” he stated.
The activist alleged that since arriving in custody, he had been denied proper medical attention despite sustaining a broken hand.
“Since I came here yesterday, they broke my hand. They have not been able to bring a doctor.
They brought a nurse instead,” he said. “Instead of them bringing medical help, they brought the media,” Sowore added.
Sowore accused the authorities of staging the media visit to manipulate public perception.
“Nobody requested for media. They are the ones who brought you. I was expecting it.
“I’ve been expecting it. This is the height of foolishness on the part of the IGP and the president of Nigeria,” he posited.
In the outburst, Sowore questioned the very legality of his arrest, claiming it was politically motivated and grounded in fear by the country’s leadership.
“There is no basis for any citizen in Nigeria to be arrested by the IG because the IG feels threatened by the legality of their position.
““What should have been done is what they don’t know how to do, swallow their pride, release me from detention, apologise to me, and ensure I get proper treatment,” he stated.
Throughout the encounter, Sowore repeatedly demanded to be allowed to speak without interruption.
“Hold on, let me speak. You will talk, please. You will talk. But let me talk,” he said, trying to regain control of the conversation.
He concluded by calling out the integrity of the Nigerian Police Force, stating bluntly, “The Nigerian police have no integrity.”
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force had yet to officially respond to Sowore’s allegations or clarify the circumstances surrounding his continued detention.
