JUSUN suspends strike after reaching agreement with CJN, stakeholders

After days of a nationwide shutdown of judicial activities, the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has announced the suspension of its industrial action following a series of high-level meetings with the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Motunmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, and other key stakeholders.

The decision was formalised through a communiqué issued on June 3, 2025, after negotiations involving the Minister of Labour and Employment, Alhaji Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), and other relevant parties.

JUSUN commenced the strike on June 2, 2025, to press for the implementation of an improved remuneration package for judiciary workers.

Their demands included implementing the N70,000 new minimum wage along with its arrears, a 25% to 35% salary increase, and a five-month wage award, all of which they insisted must be paid retrospectively.

According to the communiqué, the union agreed to suspend its strike “upon the noble intervention” of the CJN and the Minister of Labour and Employment.

The CJN and stakeholders were granted a one-month window to engage with the Federal Government of Nigeria for the release of the necessary funds to the Judiciary.

JUSUN stated that once the funds are released, the government must immediately implement the agreed demands without delay.

“Given the commitment of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, JUSUN and its organs, after due consideration, have agreed to suspend the ongoing industrial strike action,” the statement read.

Following this development, judiciary workers nationwide have been directed to resume work on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.
