Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has urged the Federal Government to drop all criminal charges against journalists and citizens prosecuted for criticising public officials.
His appeal follows President Bola Tinubu’s Democracy Day speech, where the President warned against suppressing dissent and emphasised the dangers of silencing critics.
Falana also called on the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) to act on Tinubu’s stance by discontinuing such cases.
He stressed that public officials offended by critical comments should pursue civil remedies instead of using criminal law, to protect democracy and ensure press freedom thrives in Nigeria.
