The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) has lauded the Dangote Refinery’s plan to deploy 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks across Nigeria, describing it as a groundbreaking move towards transforming the nation’s transportation and energy landscape.
The commendation was made by the PCNGI’s Commercial Coordinator, Mr Tosin Coker, during an interaction with journalists on the sidelines of the recently concluded West Africa Economic Summit (WAES) held in Abuja.
“This is a landmark development, and a bold vote of confidence in Nigeria’s gas-powered transportation future.
“Dangote Group’s decision to acquire 4,000 CNG trucks is not just significant in scale, it is also deeply strategic.
“It sends a powerful signal to the market that CNG is no longer a future aspiration but a present-day solution to energy cost, emissions, and supply chain risks,” Coker said.
He posited that the PCNGI views the move as a defining milestone in its ongoing drive to mainstream gas-powered transport in Nigeria, stressing that the Initiative is designed to drive adoption, catalyse investment, spur innovation, and fast-track the country’s transition to cleaner, cheaper, and more sustainable transport fuels.
Coker confirmed that the PCNGI and the Dangote Group are working closely together to deepen CNG technology nationwide.
“We see the Dangote Group as a cornerstone partner in achieving nationwide penetration of CNG technology, particularly in the haulage and industrial logistics space,” he stated.
Coker noted that the partnership would focus on regulatory support for the rollout of CNG vehicles and daughter stations, and ensure technical alignment on infrastructure design, safety, and interoperability standards.
Highlighting PCNGI’s progress, Mr Coker disclosed that nearly 300 CNG conversion centres have already been established across the country, with operations spanning at least 20 states and increasing refuelling stations every week.
According to Coker, “Our target is ambitious but achievable; we intend to reach every local government area in Nigeria and establish at least 1,000 refuelling stations by 2027.”
On the issue of affordability, Coker said the Initiative is collaborating with banks and financial institutions, including Credicorp, to make CNG vehicle conversion accessible to all tax-paying Nigerians, especially civil servants, teachers, and lecturers.
He cited the CALM Fund as one such effort, which enables flexible payment plans for conversion kits and services.
“Additionally, many of the conversion centres are partnering with finance institutions to provide their payment solutions,” he added.
Coker also highlighted the global success of CNG adoption, noting that millions of vehicles currently run on CNG in countries like India, Iran, Poland, Brazil, and Argentina, with robust safety records.
He explained that CNG cylinders are rigorously tested, built to withstand high pressure, and equipped with multiple safety features.
“In the event of a leak, CNG, being lighter than air, disperses quickly, significantly reducing fire risk.
Its ignition temperature is close to 600°C, much higher than petrol’s, making it safer in accident scenarios,” he said.
To further reinforce safety, the PCNGI has instituted strict safety, training, and certification protocols for all conversion centres, refuelling stations, and vehicle operators in line with global best practices and in collaboration with regulatory agencies like the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON).
He also revealed the forthcoming launch of the Nigeria Gas Vehicle Monitoring System (NGVMS), a comprehensive inter-agency platform aimed at enhancing regulatory oversight and safety for CNG users nationwide.
The Dangote Refinery recently confirmed its investment in 4,000 CNG-powered tankers, a development industry watchers say could fast-track Nigeria’s journey toward a cleaner and more resilient energy future.
