Nine followers of popular singer Habeeb Okikiola, widely known as Portable, have been arraigned before the Magistrates’ Court in Isabo, Abeokuta, for allegedly assaulting town planning officials in Ogun State.
The defendants, Nurudeen Warris, Adetola Alashe, Samuel Adeleke, Oluwaseun Ayenuwa, Oluwapelumi Adeosun, Gospel Kanu, Precious Ohiegebo, Ifeoluwa Babatunde, and Fatimo Muhammed, were charged with five offences, including felony, assault, armed threats, obstruction of public officials, and intent to kill.
According to Police Prosecutor Sunday Ekong, the incident occurred at 10:00 AM on Wednesday in Oke-Osa, Tigbo Ilu, Sango-Ota, when officers from the Ota Zonal Planning Office attempted to enforce state urban development regulations at Odogwu Bar, owned by Portable.
Ekong told the court that the accused, alongside Portable, who remains at large, attacked and obstructed three town planners, namely Abidemi Onabanjo, Ramon Lateef, and Akinpelumi Oyero, preventing them from carrying out their official duties.
He further alleged that the defendants were armed with cutlasses and guns, displaying violent behaviour capable of inciting public unrest.
The court noted that their actions violated Sections 516, 356(3), 80, 249(d), and 320 of the Ogun State Criminal Code Laws, 2006.
Despite pleading not guilty, Magistrate O.M. Somefun granted each defendant N5 million bail, requiring sureties registered with the Ogun State Government.
The case has been adjourned to March 17 for trial.
