Archbishop Martins Urges Consecrated Catholics to Be Beacons of Hope

As the World Day of Consecrated Life was celebrated globally on February 2, Archbishop Alfred Adewale Martins of the Archdiocese of Lagos has called on consecrated men and women to be symbols of hope in a world burdened by uncertainty and despair.

In his message to consecrated individuals serving in his archdiocese, Archbishop Martins linked his call to the Jubilee Year of Hope, declared by Pope Francis, stressing the centrality of hope in the lives and apostolates of religious men and women.

“Hope is the anchor of the soul,” he said, quoting St. Teresa of Calcutta while urging consecrated persons to embrace their role as present and future leaders in their religious congregations.

Facing Challenges with Faith

Acknowledging the many challenges facing consecrated people, including spiritual struggles, physical exhaustion, and criticism from society, the Archbishop encouraged them to hold firmly to God’s promises.

He reminded them that their mission extends beyond the Church, stating: “A whole world awaits you, men and women who have lost all hope, broken homes lacking love, families distressed, hungry and abandoned children, young people without a future, the elderly, the sick, and the neglected. Your witness can restore hope and lead them to Christ.”

The Gift of Consecrated Life

Archbishop Martins further emphasized that consecrated life is a precious gift to the Church.

He highlighted that religious men and women, through their vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, offer a powerful testimony of service and devotion to God.

He also expressed deep gratitude to the religious working within the Lagos Archdiocese for their commitment and contributions to its spiritual, pastoral, and social development.

Significance of the Celebration

The World Day of Consecrated Life coincides with the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord and serves as a time for the Church to recognize and pray for religious vocations.

In the Archdiocese of Lagos, there are 247 male religious priests and 326 female religious members from 27 different congregations actively involved in pastoral and social ministries.

The Archdiocese comprises 229 parishes across 20 deaneries, where these religious work tirelessly to serve the community.

The Archbishop concluded his message by entrusting consecrated individuals to the maternal intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, urging them to remain steadfast in faith, service, and hope.
