President Tinubu Returns to Abuja After G20 Summit in Brazil

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has concluded his participation in the 19th G20 Leaders Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and departed for Abuja on Saturday morning.

The Nigerian leader took off from Galeão Air Force Base at 10:30 a.m. local time, wrapping up an eventful week of high-level engagements and economic diplomacy.

During the summit, President Tinubu strongly advocated for greater African representation on the global stage.

He called on the United Nations Security Council to reflect global diversity by allocating two permanent seats to Africa, emphasizing Nigeria’s readiness to serve as a representative.

“Nigeria stands ready and willing to serve as a representative of Africa in this capacity,” Tinubu affirmed.

The Nigerian president also praised the G20's commitment to tackling hunger and poverty, describing the alliance as a crucial step toward global development.

“This is a significant milestone in eradicating hunger and poverty worldwide,” he stated.

On the sidelines of the summit, President Tinubu engaged in bilateral talks with Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), who applauded Nigeria's economic reforms under his administration.

Georgieva highlighted positive indicators reflecting the impact of these reforms on Nigeria’s economic outlook.

One of the summit's major achievements for Nigeria was the signing of a $2.5 billion Letter of Intent between the Nigerian government and JBS S.A., a Brazilian meat processing giant and one of the top three in the world.

The agreement is expected to bolster Nigeria’s agricultural and livestock sectors, contributing to food security and job creation.

President Tinubu was accompanied on the trip by a high-level delegation, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar; Minister of Livestock Development Idi Mukhtar Maiha; Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture, and Creativity Hannatu Musawa; Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security Dr Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi; and the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.

The president’s journey to Brazil followed his hosting of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Abuja earlier this month.
