It was all glitz and glamour as various stakeholders in the transport sector came together at the Banquet Hall of the Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, on Thursday, 18th July 2024, for the inaugural meeting of the 2024 National Transporters' Game.
The National Transporters Games is the first of its kind in the world and has been slated to be held between the 20th and 26th of October 2024.
The Stakeholders, comprising mainly the Transporters unions across the Road, Sea and Air, arrived at the decision during the first-of-its-kind critical stakeholders meeting.
The Chairman of the Organising Committee of the Games, Senator (Prince) Gbolahan Dada, while welcoming members of the Transporters Union emphasised the need for all Transporters in Nigeria to utilise the opportunity offered by the Games to forge a formidable bond of unity among all players of the transport sector in the country.
According to him, the transport economy is a very critical and one of the most potent sectors of the country.
He stressed that there is an urgent need for all transporters to come together to achieve greater things.
The maiden edition is expected to feature eight different sports in the male and female categories.
The selected sports are football, athletics, boxing, table tennis, opon ayo, draught, cycling and swimming.
It is pertinent to note that great sportsmen have emerged from among the transporters in Nigeria, which include but are not limited to Babatunde Mudasiru Lawal and Rasheed Yekini.
In her remarks, Chief Mrs Falilat Ogunkoya implored the Unions to ensure strict adherence to the vision of the organisers in detecting budding talents from among the transporters by presenting only their members in the various teams, and not making use of mercenaries.
The different unions promised to participate according to the rules of the Games.
The Project Director, Wale Shodeinde, appreciated members of the Transporters Union for attending the inaugural meeting and promised that further details would be released to the public soon.
The Games, which is expected to be a week-long event, featuring the unveiling of Games Mascot and Press Conference in the Federal Ministry of Sport Development, Abuja with Roadshow, Musical Concert, Beauty Pageant, and Award Ceremony at the gala nite will be declared open by the President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
