For infringing on Nigerian consumer rights and violations of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, 2018, British American Tobacco Nigeria Limited (BAT) has been fined $110 million.
As a result, the firm has agreed to pay the said sum to the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) as a penalty.
Furthermore, BAT will equally be monitored for the next two years under the supervision of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to ensure appropriate behavioural and business practices modification to be more consistent with compliance with prevailing competition laws/regulations, and tobacco control efforts.
The above actions were made public through a statement issued by the FCCPC on Wednesday, with an addition that it would stop the criminal prosecution of the multinational tobacco company in Nigerian courts.
