Cyber-bullying: IGP Files Notice Of Interlocutory Injunction Against Relationship Blogger, Blessing Okoro

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has instituted a Notice of Interlocutory Injunction against a relationship blogger, Blessing Okoro (also known as BlessingCEO) before a Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos.

In its Notice of Interlocutory Injunction filed before the Justice Yelim Bogoro-led court, the police through its counsel, Rotshang Faith Dimka, is asking the judge to restrain 'BlessingCEO) from further defaming the nominal complainant, Mrs Folashade Williams, granting further interviews, and blackmailing the prosecution as well as court officials.

In her response when the matter came up on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, 'BlessingCEO', through her lawyer, Prince Nwafuru, initiated a Preliminary Objection, questioning the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court to entertain the matter.

Specifically, Nwafuru contended that it is the State High Court that has the jurisdiction to look into the case.

However, the prosecution through Dimka raised an opposition to Nwafuru's contention, citing the Cybercrimes Act and other relevant Federal Government (FG) enactments which had stated that it is only the Federal High Court that could entertain such.

While the case lasted, Justice Bogoro directed parties to adopt their various briefs of arguments before the court, which they did.

The judge also declared that he would look into all the applications before him and subsequently deliver a ruling on the Notice of Preliminary Objection filed by the defendant.

Justice Bogoro adjourned until January 30, 2024, for ruling.

It would be recalled that the judge had remanded 'BlessingCEO' in prison custody over her alleged involvement in Cyber-bullying.

Justice Bogoro had arrived at the decision after the police arraigned the social media influencer on a six-count charge of Cyber-bullying, libel and for exhibiting uncensored movies.

The judge particularly directed that the controversial blogger be kept in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS) after she had pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Specifically, the prosecutor, Dimka, had hinted to the court that 'BlessingCEO', a resident of 1b, Tunbosun Osoby Street, off Kuboye Road, Lekki, Lagos State, on October 16, 2022, did intentionally sent messages using her Instagram handle @officialblessingceo to bully, threaten and harass one Folashade Samuels, a.k.a. mama jazz, a younger sister to Late Bimbo Ogbonna.

'BlessingCEO' was equally accused of using her Instagram handle @officialblessingceo, to injure the reputation of Mama Jazz and her late sister by exposing them to hatred, contempt, and ridicule.

The prosecution further accused 'BlessingCEO' of exhibiting a film and video work titled “Sweet Sour” without a censorship certificate and without holding a licence as issued by the National Film & Video Censors Board.

Some messages, allegedly sent by the defendant through her Instagram handle @officialblessingceo to mama jazz, include: “Let’s ask mama jazz where her father is??? Their father had the same issue with their mother, Ebele, and ran away for his dear life. IVD’s crime was that he was not brave enough to run…

"The family of late Bimbo is after IVD’’s properties and life. Especially her elder sister, Mamajazz. Bimbo and IVD are well-known people in Lagos, and it’s not a hidden fact that even in their estate, Bimbo is violent."

According to the police, the offences contravened Section 33 of the National Film & Video Censors Board Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, and are punishable under the same Act.

'BlessingCEO' was later granted bail in the sum of N10m with equal sureties by another judge of the court, Justice Tijjani Ringim, after the prosecution had asked him to exercise its discretion while setting bail requirements.
