Justice Oyindamola Ogala of an Ikeja High Court, on Monday, sentenced an armed robber, Suleiman Olasoda, to 14 years imprisonment with hard labour.
The judge decided after the convicted Olasoda agreed to the terms of the plea bargain proposed by the Lagos State Government (LASG).
Olasoda got the jail term for involvement in attempted armed robbery at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre.
Justice Ogala who announced that the convict had entered into an agreement with the state and inquired if he was forced to accept the agreement, to which the convict answered that he was not forced, added, “In pursuant to the plea agreement dated November 27, the defendant is to serve a sentence of 14 years imprisonment, which will commence from the date of remand in October 2016.”
Olasoda had pleaded guilty to the amended charge, read in the Yoruba Language, for attempted robbery which occurred on September 18, 2016.
While the trial lasted, the prosecution called three witnesses and the defendant opted for a plea bargain.
In specific terms, the lawyer for the LASG, Mrs Uju Nwogazi, hinted to the court that the convict, a 29-year-old bus driver, was arrested while attempting to rob one Adedeji Oluwaseun of his Nokia phone.
Nwogazi added that the facts were sufficient to prove the offences beyond reasonable doubt, an argument, which counsel for the defence, Mr Kevin Okereke, did not object to.
