Emefiele Slammed With Fresh Criminal Charge

A fresh 20-count charge has been filed against the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

The fresh charge was filed before the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court.

This development was made public by the counsel to the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN), Mohammed Bakodo Abubakar, who equally made known the intention of the FGN to withdraw the earlier charge before Justice Nicholas Oweibo of a Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos.

At the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, the FGN had instituted a 2 count charge bordering on the illegal possession of firearms against Emefiele.

Meanwhile, the FGN through its lawyer, Abubakar, posited that the withdrawal of the earlier charge followed the result of further investigations.

But, Emefiele's counsel, and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Joseph Daudu, raised an opposition, with an argument that because the government was in disobedience of the court’s order granting Emefiele bail, its application could not be taken.

It is recalled that Justice Oweibo had on July 25, 2023, admitted Emefiele to bail in the sum of N20m on a two-count charge of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and ordered his remand at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.

But the DSS rearrested Emefiele after a firm battle with the officials of the NCoS within the court's premises.

Meanwhile, Abubakar, while speaking with Judiciary Correspondents, revealed that the FGN has filed fresh charges against Emefiele in Abuja.

The lawyer specifically stated that a fresh 20-count charge had been filed before the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, against the suspended CBN boss.
