Whitney Adeniran: I dont know what the drugs administered to my late daughter were meant for, father informs court

Mr Michael Adeniran, the father of the 12-year-old Chrisland Schools student, Whitney Adeniran, who died on February 9, 2023, has told Justice Oyindamola Ogala of an Ikeja High Court that he did not know the use of the drugs that were administered to her daughter on January 20, 2023, by their family doctor before her death.

Michael Adeniran made the revelation while being cross-examined by the fourth defence counsel, Mr Ademola Animashaun.

The counsel had asked the witness if he was aware that the combination of 'Nitrazepam' and 'Amitriptyline, which was given to the deceased on January 20, 2023, when she took ill, was a semi-disaster.

“Your daughter complained of anxiety on January 20 and your family doctor prescribed these two drugs for her.

“Do you know that the combination of the two drugs is a semi-disaster?” Animashaun had asked.

In his response, Mr Adeniran, said, "Although I do not know what the two drugs were meant for, I disagree with you that the drugs prescribed by the family doctor are a semi-disaster.

“On January 20 when I picked her up from school, and she complained of anxiety to the Dr, she was given the drugs and her mother made sure she used it the right way.”

The deceased father equally informed the court that he would not be surprised if the private pathologist hired by his family was a police pathologist, adding that he could not remember the names of his friends who came to the Agege Hospital where the deceased was rushed to when she slumped.

The Lagos State Government is prosecuting a vendor, three other staff members of Chrisland Schools, Ikeja and the school on a 2-counts charge of involuntary manslaughter and negligence which they pleaded not guilty to.

Those being tried are Ademoye Adewale, Kuku Fatai, Belinda Amao and Nwatu Victoria.

While proceedings lasted on the matter, Justice Ogala admitted in evidence a Certificate of Identification issued by one Opeyemi Sunday and a USB flash drive containing a phone conversation with Whitney’s father.

It would be recalled that Whitney’s father had on May 25 tendered three documents against the school before the court.

The documents are a medical report from Agege Central Hospital, a medical report from Inland Hospital, Lagos, and a printout of a screenshot of conversations from a Snapchat group page entitled 'Lagos Housewives'.

The matter has been adjourned until October 12, 2023, for the continuation of the trial.

Meanwhile, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chief Bolaji Ayorinde, representing Chrisland Schools, will further cross-examine the witness on the next adjourned date.
