Osun governorship election: Supreme Court declares Adeleke as governor

The election of Senator Ademola Adeleke as the governor of Osun State, was today upheld by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

In declaring Senator Adeleke as the winner of the governorship poll, the apex court held that the Court of Appeal correctly reinstated Senator Adeleke as governor of the state.

It would be recalled that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared that Senator Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled 403,371 votes, to defeat then-incumbent governor Adegboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 375,027 votes.

But not satisfied, Oyetola and the APC rejected the result of the poll and headed for the tribunal.

In its January 27, 2023 majority verdict, the Justice Tertse Kume-led tribunal annulled Adeleke’s victory and declared Oyetola the winner of the poll.

The governorship election in the state was held on July 16, 2022.
