The Peoples Alternative Political Movement (TPAP-M), a Mass Political Movement Committed to the Emergence of a Mass Workers Party and the Socialist Transformation of Nigeria, is not surprised at the call from the Governors on the Federal Government to sack workers that are 50 years and over, and levy anyone earning above N30,000 as part of measures being proposed by the ruling class to save Nigeria.
TPAP-M completely rejects this inhuman, and irresponsible call by the governors, and calls on Nigeria workers in the public and private sectors, and across formal and informal sectors to not only reject this attempt to increase the burden of hardships being placed on them, but to also remain vigilant, and prepare for mass resistance.
This call by the governors is a confirmation of our position that the Nigeria ruling class is not only incompetent, but that it is also bereft of ideas and programs to lead this country out of the political, economic, and social morass and crisis, into which its leadership has driven the country and her people.
There are a number of things fundamentally wrong with this call:
First, the implication of this is that the governors are calling for a massive retrenchment exercise that will affect workers who are 50 years old, and above, the most experienced workers.
This will not only lead to a decimation of the civil and public services, but it will have a profound impact on the economy, undermining economic growth and resilience, while also driving affected workers and their families and dependents into poverty.
Second, the call to levy everyone earning above N30,000 is a most ridiculous, if not most inhumane proposal. N30,000 is the minimum wage, the payment on which many of these governors have defaulted in paying.
This call should be seen for what it is; a call to levy all citizens and residents of Nigeria to help bail this incompetent and failed ruling class out. But even more fundamentally, it represents a call for the most serious attack yet on the living standards and conditions of ordinary workers and working people.
Amid rising inflation and a deepening cost of living crisis, this call is not only insensitive, but it is also reflective of the determination of the ruling class to further attack the conditions of and make even more precarious, the existence of the poorest of the poor, of the working poor.
And finally, thirdly, this call if it goes through in the public sector, will serve as a precedent and model for the onslaught to be replicated in the private sector.
The implication of this is that this proposal is an attack on the entire working class and toiling masses, and represents a new phase in the class struggle being waged by the incompetent and failed ruling class, on the working class and toiling masses and their allies.
There is also a political undertone to this new attack, the thinking on the part of the ruling class that an economically weakened working class and working people, will also translate into a politically weak, and disoriented working class.
Our task and duty as workers activists, and socialists, is to deepen our organising work among the mass of workers, and intensify our mobilisation within the class to #ResistHardship and reject the attempt of the ruling class to push the burden of their economic mess on our shoulders
We call on workers and working people across the country to put pressure on their organisations – their trade unions, trade union centres, and associations – to organise, mobilise and prepare the working class and toiling masses for mass resistance.
We call on the trade union centres, the NLC and TUC, and their industrial union affiliates to implacably reject this call by the Governors, and to begin to take steps to prepare the class for massive resistance, including launching a General Strike, and commencing Mass Protests against this call to retrench and impose levies on workers, in particular; and to Resist the Hardships and burdens being imposed on workers by the Cost Of Living Crisis, in general.
It is also very instructive, that in a general election year, none of the main political parties, nor major presidential candidates of the main parties, have issued a condemnation or rebuttal of this Call To Poverty by the Governors.
It is further indication that alas, the alternative that is not on the ballot, the Socialist Alternative, is indeed the only alternative that can propel the struggle for the self-emancipation of the working class; and it is further prove that it is up to us, to take our destiny into our own hands, and not rely on some mythical messianic figure to achieve our emancipation and defend our interests.
TPAP-M, therefore, calls on workers and working peoples activists, across the public and private sectors, across the formal and informal sectors, and the whole country to become more vigilant, to double their efforts at organising resistance, and link up with us and join the efforts to mobilise for mass resistance.
If you feel the same way we feel about these issues, and you want to be part of a concerted effort to organize resistance, reach out to us and register to join the Campaign For Socialist Transformation of Nigeria (CAST NIGERIA) – #CASTNaija; #ResistHardship; #EndInsecurity; #WorkersPoliticalParticipation:6 #ANewNigeriaIsPossible
