Idumota mayhem: Kunle Poly, another remanded for 30 days

By Francis IWUCHUKWU

The remand of Azeez Adekunle Lawal, a.k.a. Kunle Poly and Adekanbi Shonibare Wahab, both members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), in Ikoyi facility of the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS) for another 30 days over idumota mayhem was on Monday ordered by a Yaba Chief Magistrate’s Court, Lagos State, Nigeria.

Chief Magistrate Linda Balogun, who presided over the court made the remand order while granting a remand application attached with a three-count charge of conspiracy, murder and for being members of a secret cult, named Eiye confraternity.

It would be recalled that Chief Magistrate Balogun had on January 27 ordered the remand of Kunle Poly, Adekanbi alongside Prince Idowu Onikoyi Johnson and Agboola Akeem Kosoko, in the facility of the Zone 2, Command, Onikan for 30 days for Police to conclude investigation on allegations of threat to life and property, violence, cultism, mayhem, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, unlawful possession of firearms, conspiracy and murder made against them.

When the matter came up today, the prosecuting counsel, Morufu Animashaun, told the court that the police had concluded an investigation on the allegations.

The prosecutor argued that upon conclusion of the investigation, Kunle Poly and Adekanbi Shonibare Wahab were found culpable of offences bordering on an alleged conspiracy to commit felony to wit murder; unlawful Killing of one Gafar Sanusi and being members of Eye confraternity.

The offences, Animashaun told the court, contravened Sections 233 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015, and Section 3 of the Anti-cultism Laws Lagos State 2021.

Their pleas were however not taken over the alleged offences.

The prosecution, therefore, prayed the court to remand them for 30 days to enable the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) to issue a piece of legal advice on the allegations against them.

Efforts by their team of lawyers led by Adeshina Ogunlana to get them released on bail were fruitless as the Chief Magistrate Balogun made an order remanding them at the Ikoyi Custodial Centre, Lagos State, pending advice from the Lagos State DPP.

Chief Magistrate Balogun, therefore, adjourned the matter till March 28 for mention.

But the plea of Prince Idowu Onikoyi Johnson and Agboola Akeem Kosoko were taken on the charges of conspiracy and conduct likely to breach public peace, made against them by the police.

Though both Prince Idowu and Agboola, pleaded not guilty to the charges, they were admitted to bail in the sum of N500, 000, with two sureties in like sum.
