Drug peddler jailed 6 months

A 31-year-old hard drugs peddler, Sodiq Sanni, was on Monday convicted and sentenced to six months imprisonment by a Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The court presided over by Justice Akintayo Aluko handed down the jail term after Sanni pleaded guilty to a count charge of unlawful dealing in 100 grams of Cocaine slammed against him by the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Justice Aluko who held that three months of the jail term slammed on the convict shall be for Community Service, which he must perform at Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State thrice a week for two hours each day with the supervision of a Community Service Officer provided by the Court’s Deputy Chief Registrar (DCR) declared that the jail term begins from the date of his arrest.

The judge also ordered that the convict shall provide a surety who will provide a N100,000, Bond till the convict completes the jail term.

It would be recalled that the prosecutor, M. I. Erondu had told the court that the jailed Sanni was arrested on December 10, 2021, at Okesuna Street, Bolupelu area of Ikotun, Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State with the banned substance.

The prosecutor had then insisted that the offence committed by the convict, contravened Section 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The charge against the convict reads: “That you Sodiq Sanni, male, adult, 31 years old on or about the 10th day of December 2021 at Okesuna Street, Bolupelu Area Ikotun Alimosho LGA, Lagos State, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable court without lawful authority dealt in 100 grams of Cannabis Sativa a narcotic drug similar to Cocaine, Heroin and LSD and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under S. 11 (c) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap. N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.”
