Former Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Chief Bolaji Ayorinde, SAN, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Professor Alfred Bandele Kasunmu, SAN, celebrating his life as a distinguished legal icon whose integrity and scholarship indelibly shaped the Nigerian legal profession.
In a personal statement released to the press, Chief Ayorinde, who also serves as the Chairman Board of Partners at BA Law LLP, reflected on the profound impact of Kasunmu, who passed away at the age of 92.
He specifically recalled the era of 2005 when he was elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), highlighting the formidable figures who then led the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN).
Ayorinde listed titans of the Bar, including the late Bankole Oki, SAN; Chief Richard Osuolale Akinjide, SAN; Kehinde Sofola, SAN; Professor Ben Nwabueze, SAN; Chief Okpoko, SAN; Chief G.O.K. Ajayi, SAN; Alhaji A.G.F. AbdulRazaq, SAN; and Debo Akande, SAN.
He described them as “formidable men of great character and learning,” noting that Kasunmu was an integral pillar of this prestigious group.
“Professor Bandele Alfred Kasunmu was a part of this eminent group who led the Bar with integrity and distinction,” Ayorinde stated.
Recalling his early days among these legal giants, Ayorinde described the experience as awe-inspiring.
“It was a feeling of awe to sit among them and listen to their well-informed views on issues concerning the profession and Nigeria in general. In fact, it was considered a privilege to be called upon to share your opinion on matters being discussed,” he said.
Ayorinde praised Kasunmu not only for his most distinguished career at the Bar but also for his significant contributions to academia, public service, and legal scholarship.
He extended his condolences to the Kasunmu family, specifically acknowledging the late professor’s wife and highlighting the strong family values that are evident in his children.
“He was a family man whose qualities shine brightly in his offspring,” Ayorinde added.
Professor Alfred Bandele Kasunmu, SAN, was born on May 23, 1934, in Lagos to parents from Ilesa, Osun State. His academic journey began at prestigious institutions including Baptist Academy, Lagos, before he proceeded to University College London, where he obtained his Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws degrees.
Called to the Nigerian Bar in 1964, Kasunmu started his academic career as a pioneer lecturer at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University).
He later joined the University of Lagos in 1971, rising to the rank of Professor of Law and serving as Dean of the Faculty from 1973 to 1975. His tenure at UNILAG was instrumental in strengthening legal education in the country.
In 1975, he transitioned into public service, serving as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Lagos State for three years. He was elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria on January 25, 1978, making him one of the earliest members of the Nigerian Inner Bar.
A prolific scholar, Kasunmu co-authored several influential legal texts and published numerous articles covering a broad range of legal subjects. His legal practice saw him represent prominent expatriate and domestic clients before various courts and arbitration panels both in Nigeria and abroad.
