Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested former board chairman of the defunct Skybank Plc and prominent businessman, Tunde Ayeni, in Abuja over allegations of money laundering, misappropriation, and diversion of funds amounting to ₦36,540,058,400 and $30 million.
Ayeni was taken into custody on Thursday, April 23, 2026, and is currently being held at the EFCC’s facility.
His arrest follows ongoing investigations into loans allegedly obtained from Polaris Bank Plc by entities linked to him.
According to EFCC investigators, the loans were secured for specific projects, including marine security, electricity distribution, and estate development, but were instead diverted to finance the acquisition of NITEL/MTEL assets through NATCOM accounts.
The anti-graft agency disclosed that twelve companies connected to Ayeni are under probe for allegedly obtaining depositors’ funds from Polaris Bank and channelling them into questionable ventures.
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed the arrest but declined to provide further details, noting that Ayeni will be arraigned in court upon conclusion of investigations.
