Justice Mojisola Dada of the Lagos State Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja has dismissed the no-case submission filed by social media celebrity Ismaila Mustapha, popularly known as Mompha, in his ongoing ₦6 billion money laundering trial.
The judge ruled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had successfully established a prima facie case against Mompha and his company, Ismalob Global Investment Limited, thereby ordering the defendants to open their defence.
The EFCC had arraigned Mompha and his company on January 12, 2022, on an eight-count charge bordering on conspiracy to launder funds obtained through unlawful activity, retention of criminal proceeds, failure to disclose assets, and possession of documents containing false pretences, among others.
According to one of the charges, the defendants, alongside one Ahmadu Mohammed (still at large), allegedly conspired in 2016 to launder the sum of ₦5,998,884,653.18 with the intent of promoting illegal activities, including obtaining money by false pretence.
Mompha pleaded not guilty to all charges. The EFCC, through its counsel, Suleiman I. Suleiman, called five witnesses to testify before closing its case.
His counsel, Kolawole Salami, subsequently filed a no-case submission, arguing that the prosecution failed to establish any link between Mompha and the alleged offences.
However, Justice Dada held that the prosecution had provided sufficient evidence warranting an explanation from the defendants.
The case has been adjourned until January 27 and 28, 2026, for the commencement of the defence.
