Dangote Fertiliser Limited (DFL), one of Africa’s largest fertiliser producers, has announced a strategic agreement with Germany’s thyssenkrupp Uhde Fertiliser Technology (UFT) to expand its urea production capacity in Nigeria.
The partnership will see DFL license four new, cutting-edge urea granulation units, leveraging UFT’s advanced Fluid Bed Granulation Technology.
The expansion is set to increase DFL’s annual urea granule output from approximately 2.65 million metric tons to over 8 million metric tons.
Each of the four new units, to be constructed at the existing complex in Lekki, will boast a nameplate capacity of 4,235 metric tons per day, delivering a combined daily output of 16,940 metric tons of low-emission fertiliser.
This investment represents a deepening of the existing relationship between the two giants; DFL’s current complex, which has been operational since 2021, already utilises UFT technology.
Beyond sheer scale, the focus of the expansion is firmly on sustainability and efficiency. The new facilities will incorporate UFT's energy-efficient scrubbing system, specifically engineered to minimise pressure drop while effectively controlling dust and ammonia emissions to meet stringent global environmental standards.
Furthermore, the plants will utilise the innovative Ammonia Convert Technology (ACT), which integrates ammonium sulphate byproducts directly into the final urea granules, effectively eliminating waste streams and yielding valuable commercial advantages.
Commenting on the collaboration, Nadja Haakansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde, highlighted the shared vision.
"This partnership, underscores our shared vision for sustainable industrial development and global food security.
“By deploying our proven UFT Fluid Bed Granulation Technology, we are setting new standards in efficiency and environmental stewardship in fertiliser production,” she stated.
President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, echoed this commitment to progress. “We are pleased to deepen our collaboration.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to agricultural self-sufficiency and industrial progress across Africa,” he noted.
Dangote added that the high-quality urea produced would meet global standards while reducing environmental impact, further positioning Nigeria as a global leader in fertiliser production.
Thyssenkrupp Uhde’s UFT Fluid Bed Granulation Technology is a globally recognised solution, currently accounting for over 70% of the world's urea granule output.
The expansion solidifies DFL’s mission to enhance agricultural productivity and support food security across the continent, ensuring a more resilient and future-ready value chain for Africa.
