(OPINION) Fr. Nwebe Joy’s Blatant Attacks on Evangelism. Ebuka Obi: The Pull-Him-Down Syndrome

By Azu Okafor

Throughout history and in contemporary times, we often encounter the disturbing phenomenon of sibling rivalry; brother against brother, prophet against prophet.

These age-old conflicts are rooted in jealousy, envy, and other destructive forms of competition.

The biblical story of Joseph the Dreamer and his envious brothers remains a timeless case study.

Similarly, Jeffrey Archer’s bestseller Kane and Abel explores the same theme. We even see echoes of the “Judas syndrome” in today's religious landscape.

But how does one explain the persistent, vicious, and misleading attacks on a man you have never met, nor share any direct relationship with?

No true man of God should descend from his exalted calling of preaching the gospel, spreading love, hope, and charity, to publicly condemn and criticise a fellow labourer in God’s vineyard, as Fr Nwebe Joy is reportedly doing to Evangelist Ebuka Obi.

For context, Fr Nwebe Joy is a clergyman ordained about ten years ago, whose congregation reportedly disintegrated shortly after his ordination.

Among Fr Nwebe's grievances is that Evangelist Ebuka Obi’s teachings on virgin purity have drawn many traditional Igbo Catholics into the Zion Ministry.

He also objects to the Evangelist’s open and direct deliverance methods, claiming they strip candidates of dignity.

Yet, the Bible says Christ “prevailed over demons and made a public spectacle of them.”

Evangelist Ebuka’s methods are inspired and have proven effective in propagating the gospel of deliverance. His open approach arguably resonates more with today’s believers than secret rituals.

Fr Nwebe’s tirade is particularly ironic given his rumoured history of philandering, a serious contradiction of his priestly vows of chastity.

In a bizarre attempt to discourage believers in the diaspora, particularly those he may perceive as key financial supporters, Fr Nwebe accused the Evangelist of exploiting “American virtues.” How absurd can a supposed man of God get?

In another episode, Fr Nwebe claimed he visited a female member of the Zion Ministry and found she wasn't wearing a bra, yet he reportedly spent the night with her! What exactly is going on?

In one publicly circulated video, Fr Nwebe tried to debunk Evangelist Ebuka’s chastity teachings by cursing him while barefoot, feet connected to the soil, a practice more associated with traditionalist rituals than Christianity, and highly unbecoming of a genuine servant of God.

Many observers wonder why Evangelist Ebuka has not taken legal action against Fr Nwebe for cyberbullying and blackmail or reported him to Catholic authorities at the Vatican.

Is Fr Nwebe now a full-time blogger or an influencer paid to discredit his colleague? Could there be a puppet master behind these attacks? Time will tell.

One thing is clear, Fr Nwebe is fast becoming a “prophet killer,” like the brothers of Joseph, who out of envy said: “Here comes the dreamer. Let us kill him and see what becomes of his dreams. Shall he indeed rule over us, his elder brothers?”

On this note, I call on the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria and respected leaders in the body of Christ to caution Fr Nwebe Joy against these pull-him-down tactics.

His actions are disgraceful, ignoble, and reek of envy, jealousy, and resentment.

Such behaviour undermines the church and its mission. A kingdom divided against itself cannot stand.

Shalom!
