Lagos Speaker Obasa Impeached Over Alleged Multi-Billion Naira Fraud

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has been impeached over alleged financial misconduct and statutory infractions.

The decision was reached by members of the House, leading to the immediate appointment of Deputy Speaker Mojisola Lasbat Meranda as his replacement.

Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1, previously served as the House’s Chief Whip.

Sources revealed that Obasa, 52, was in Atlanta, USA, at the time of his removal.

The impeachment follows reports alleging that Obasa oversaw the withdrawal of N43.5 billion for backup vehicles for lawmakers and engaged in other questionable activities.

Obasa, who became Speaker on June 8, 2015, has faced numerous allegations of fraud and political malpractice throughout his tenure.

In 2020, investigations revealed he allegedly diverted Lagos State funds to personal firms and accounts.

He was also linked to alleged multiple assets within Lagos, raising further questions about his financial dealings.

Though the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) invited Obasa for questioning after widespread media reports, no charges were filed.

Obasa denied all allegations at the time.
