For attempting to sexually assault a 10-year-old girl, (name withheld), a 32-year-old student, Essien Aniedi-Bassey was today sentenced to 21 years imprisonment.
The student was sent to jail by the Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, Ikeja, presided over by Justice Abiola Soladoye.
Justice Soladoye took the decision against Aniedi-Bassey after he pleaded guilty to attempted sexual assault by penetration and indecent treatment of a child, made against him by the Lagos State Government, LASG.
The judge held that “The combined term of the 21 years imprisonment shall begin from March 23, 2018.”
As the proceeding lasted, the counsel for the LASG, Ms Abimbola Abolade had presented two witnesses, the survivor and an Investigative Police Officer, IPO, before the convict opted for a plea bargain agreement.
The counsel had hinted to the court that the convict committed the offence sometime in August 2017 at Araromi Valley Estate, Ojodu, Lagos.
Abolade submitted that the convict attempted to defile a minor, adding that the convict indecently treated the survivor by touching her breasts.
According to the prosecution, the offence contravene Sections 135 and 262 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
